How to buy
Economical sells through brokers; Sonnet sells direct online; Family Insurance Solutions serves BC residents. Your premium depends on your profile, location, and coverage, so confirm current pricing with a quote.
Definity Financial is the Canadian property and casualty group formed in 2021 around Economical Insurance, which issued its first policy in 1871. Definity Insurance Company holds an AM Best Financial Strength Rating of A (Excellent) with a stable outlook, according to Definity’s published rating information.
Definity sells under several brands. Economical is broker-distributed and serves individual, commercial and farm customers across the country with personal auto, home, business property, business liability, commercial vehicle and farm insurance. Sonnet, launched in 2016, sells car, home, condo, tenant, landlord and pet insurance direct online, and says it does not offer car insurance in British Columbia or Alberta. Family Insurance Solutions offers personal auto and home insurance to residents of British Columbia.
Which brand you see depends on whether you buy through a broker or online and where you live. Confirm the issuing company, the coverage available in your province and your price in a quote.
A carrier's marketing rarely tells you what matters. Before you buy auto coverage from Definity (Economical, Sonnet), or anyone, weigh four things that actually predict your experience:
- Financial strength. An insurer must be able to pay claims years from now. Check its AM Best financial-strength rating; A- or better signals a stable balance sheet.
- Claims & complaints. Ask how claims are reported and handled, and check any complaint information your provincial insurance regulator publishes.
- Coverage and exclusions. Two policies at the same price can differ enormously. Read what's covered, the limits, the deductible, and, most importantly, the exclusions.
- Discounts and price. Bundling, claims-free, and safety discounts move the number. Always gather at least two quotes so the comparison is real.
AM Best ratings, pricing, and product availability change over time and vary by province, so confirm the current specifics with the carrier or in a quote.
